The owners’ original brief was to craft an entirely bespoke and immensely private family home inside their unique 3,983m2, encompassing a curation of fascinating spaces that would maximise the view of the 300-year-old surrounding forest. Versatility was a major focus for Gilbert and team, who intimately collaborated with the owners through the design phase to create one of Australia’s most distinguishing architectural achievements, which was completed in late 2023 by specialised firm, Merlin Constructions.

Panissou’s 404m2 floor plan includes a plethora of flexible spaces, enabling a melange of work, play, rest, and creativity. Every corner is crafted with boutique materials to an unparalleled standard by the Merlin team, who undertook 15 months of specialised construction on site.

Entirely encased within immense timber windows from boutique supplier, Candour Systems, Panissou’s elevation lifts it high into the verdant greenery, capturing rich northern light and warmth into the open plan living area, which is further embellished by double-height ceilings and speciality raw brass and natural stone surfaces procured directly from The Netherlands and Southern Italy.

The living area connects to a sunken, ultra-premium kitchen space, wrapped in Italian Signorino Terrazzo and Navurban Ravenswood surfaces, and containing a suite of ultra-premium appliances from the likes of Liebherr, AEG, and Asko. Opening onto a magnificent alfresco dining area, Panissou serves as the consummate entertainer, as well as an equally private sanctuary for the speciality home chef. The kitchen space is framed by one of the two mezzanine areas above, both nestled behind natural timber screens, and providing residents a unique aspect of the expansive family spaces below.

The home is a truly fascinating space to traverse. Spanning three levels, the floor plan is unlike any other. The master en suite – adorned with a vibrant green palette of Perini natural stone tiling and specialty Navurban and Blum joinery – hangs underneath the master bedroom. Four spacious and extensively sound-insulated bedrooms, two with walk-in robes, form part of the main floor, which is entirely covered in matte burnished concrete and heated via an individually zoned Stiebel Eltron hydronic system from Germany. Heating can be Wi-Fi controlled remotely from any location and provides comprehensive, year-round comfort and energy efficiency.

The opulence and connection to nature extends far beyond the property’s prolific glass perimeter, with the extensive spotted gum timber decking spaces connecting to a mosaic-tiled 11-metre, heated lap pool and outdoor shower, wonderfully framed by the forest above and below.

Panissou’s landscape is adorned with hundreds of incredibly rare and speciality trees, including Huon pine, Norfolk Island pine, and Wollemi pine, which are lit by an elaborate LED garden lighting system, adjoining a secure garage space for up to three vehicles.
